Some of you will know about my booklet, The Hopeful Mindset. In it I propose that morality arises ultimately according to an individual's beliefs about the nature of reality and his or her place in that reality. I refer to these sets of beliefs as mindsets and make the claim that there are really only two fundamental mindsets. Flavours of these two mindsets abound but at the end of the day they are all just variations of the two basic mindsets. The two mindsets give rise to very different values which, I believe, are what moral systems are built from.
In my mind if you examine the foundation of a group's moral code you will find a set of values supporting it. And if you examine those values you will see that they have arisen from one of the two basic mindsets.
